Dover's main attraction is Dover Castle, a superbly positioned defensive complex, begun in 1168 and in continuous military use until the 1980s. The Romans put Dover on the map when they chose its harbour as the base for their northern fleet and erected a lighthouse here to guide the ships into the river mouth. White Cliffs of Dover The White Cliffs of Dover are internationally famous. The Gateway visitor centre introduces the visitor to five miles of coast & countryside with spectacular views of the English Channel and Port of Dover. Little Farthingloe Farm Little Farthingloe farm lies in a scenic valley just outside of Dover. Farthingloe is a historic site that was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The farm consists of both arable land and woodland. The Monkey Rainforest The unique experience of the Monkey Rainforest offers a fun and educational day out in a realistic tropical environment. Gaze in surprise at the raucous call of a toucan flying overhead. Facilities open to members and non-members all the year round. Deal Castle Deal Castle is one of the finest artillery works in England; this fortress once carried 119 guns. Now in the care of English Heritage, this castle offers exciting battlements, dark passages and a huge basement to explore. |
